[nonostantement #131] - truth & lies / ending things / hustle economy
Now with MORE "virtual coffee"!
Welcome to nonostantement:
a weekly newsletter with decent, polemical and anomalous stuff found all over the Internet.
Hello there, my Internet friend. My name is Joele Lucherini, I am an Italian Digital Strategist, and I collected interesting stuff during last week to send you in this little newsletter - just for you.
I spend a lot of time curating this project so - if you would like to show you support to nonostantement - you can now offer me a virtual coffee here.
The perfect soundtrack while you browse the links could be this eight hours video of rain and Vangelis' "Blade Runner Blues" taken from the soundtrack of the movie!

#THEDARKSIDE
Right now, “The Truth Is Paywalled But The Lies Are Free” - scary true and soul-destroying. Example: A white supremacist on YouTube will tell you all about race and IQ for free but if you want to read a careful scholarly refutation, a legal PDF from a publisher would costs you $14.95.
On the same topic, Hackers broke into the content management systems of Eastern European media outlets in a campaign to spread misinformation about NATO. That’s an effective way to plant fake stories into real (and supposedly reliable) news source.
So, you can not trust the news. But can authorities trust their facial recognition systems, rapidly proliferating as a way to identify people everywhere? Long story short, no: The hack that could make face recognition think someone else is you.
#PEOPLE
[Video] - Charlie Kaufman, one of my favorite writers (the guy behind Being John Malkovich, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and the amazing Synecdoche, New York), has just released the trailer for his new project. Can’t wait!
[Video] - Did you know that, as firearms are largely forbidden in China, there’s a place in Texas where Chinese gun lovers can live out their firearm fantasies? Now you know.
Do you also happen to think that Microsoft Office became too tangled year after year? I just discovered that it’s easier to rewrite genetics than update Excel. So it’s not about us, it’s about them.
People in Taiwan are so travel-starved that EVA Air just introduced a special flight to nowhere on a Hello Kitty plane.
#TECH
With the huge worldwide crisis going on - unemployed teachers, cooks, dancers are now turning to Patreon, Twitch, and OnlyFans - trying to make a living. Tech investors are trying to sweeten the pill by dubbing this the “passion economy” a place where anyone can profit doing what she loves - but I prefer “Hustle Economy”.
Want to know how it works? You could try by offering me a virtual coffee here - to support this same newsletter you are reading right now… *winkwink*New generations have an objective craving for hand-made products, maybe as a response to technology-laden lives… yet for most new-gen makers, digital platforms are key to their success: Meet the clickbait craftmakers.
Mew is an interactive sound object. It purrs, it meows, it hisses. Just watch the video, it’s easier.
That's it for now.
